I Already Have Solar Panels

A battery can almost always be added to an existing system. It stores what your panels make in the day, so you can use your solar power after dark.

Why Certification Matters for a Battery

  • Tariffs. Octopus asks for the MCS document for your installation before it will switch you to its Flux tariff.
  • Electrical work. Fitting a battery is a significant electrical job. NICEIC approval covers the standard of that work.
  • The grid. A home battery has to be registered with SP Energy Networks, the local network operator. Our installer handles it.

Solar Panels Edinburgh is an introduction service, not an installation company. If you decide to go ahead, the installation contract is between you and our installer.

The Return

What Battery Storage Saves in Edinburgh

A battery does not generate anything. It changes when you use electricity, and that is where the saving comes from. It pays in two ways.

A family on the living room floor putting a coin in a piggy bank

1. Storing Your Own Solar

Without a battery, most of what your panels make in the day goes to the grid. A unit you keep is worth 26.32p, because you do not buy it. A unit you export earns 6p to 12p.

A battery adds roughly

£190 to £290 a year

For a typical Edinburgh solar system.

2. Getting More From a Battery: Time-of-Use Tariffs

On a time-of-use tariff, the price of electricity changes through the day. A battery buys when it is cheap, then uses or sells when it is expensive. That works in January too, when panels make very little.

Octopus Flux is one example, for homes with solar panels and a battery. These are its rates for Southern Scotland, which covers EH postcodes.

Octopus Flux rates for Southern Scotland on 6 October 2026
Time bandYou buy atYou sell at
2am to 5amCheap14.27p4.42p
Rest of the dayStandard23.77p9.55p
4pm to 7pmPeak33.28p27.19p

Charge at 14.27p overnight. Each unit you then use at peak, instead of buying it at 33.28p, saves 19p. Each unit you sell at peak earns 27.19p.

No Solar Panels? Economy 7

Flux needs solar panels, so a battery on its own uses a two-rate tariff such as Economy 7. Octopus's standard Economy 7 rates in Southern Scotland are 14.84p at night and 31.83p in the day, against 26.11p on a single rate.

Every unit moved from day to night saves 17p

up to about £280 a year

For a home using 2,500 kWh a year, Ofgem's typical figure, against the single rate.

That figure assumes the battery covers all your daytime use, and charging losses reduce it. The Economy 7 day rate is higher than the single rate, so a battery that is too small can cost you money. Our installer sizes it from your usage.

Tariff rates are Octopus Energy's published prices for Southern Scotland on 6 October 2026, paying by Direct Debit. They change, usually every three months, and other suppliers offer similar tariffs. Solar figures use MCS guidance note MGD 003 and the Ofgem price cap for October to December 2026. Indicative only.

Sigenergy Battery Storage, From a Platinum Installer

Our installer holds Sigenergy Platinum installer status. If you searched for Sigenergy by name, this is who your quote comes from.

One System, Not Several Boxes

Sigenergy's SigenStor combines the solar inverter, battery, power conversion, energy management and an optional EV charger in one stack.

Add Capacity Later

The battery modules stack, and Sigenergy says old and new modules can run together. You can start smaller and add storage later.

Power in a Power Cut

With a Sigen Energy Gateway fitted and the system designed for backup, your home keeps running when the grid goes down. Mention backup when you enquire, because it has to be designed in.

Runs Itself, or You Run It

The mySigen app shows what you generate, store and use. Its AI energy planning can time the charging for you.

Fits Outdoors

The casing is rated IP66, so it can go on an outside wall if there is no room indoors.

10-Year Manufacturer Warranty

Sigenergy's European warranty covers the battery modules and energy controller for 10 years, as long as the system stays connected to the internet. The warranty is Sigenergy's.

Already Have Panels?

Adding a Battery to Existing Solar Panels

If you already have panels, a battery can almost always be added. What decides the job is your inverter, the box that turns what your panels make into electricity your home can use.

If You Have a Hybrid Inverter

It was built to take storage. The battery connects to what is already on the wall.

If You Have a Standard Inverter

There are two routes. Swap it for a hybrid inverter, or fit a battery with its own inverter built in, which leaves your existing setup untouched.

Not sure which you have? Our installer can tell from the make and model. When you enquire, say roughly when your panels were fitted.

A battery added to existing panels also carries 0% VAT until 31 March 2027.

31 March 2027

The 0% VAT Deadline for Battery Storage

Battery storage fitted to homes currently carries 0% VAT. That covers a battery fitted with new panels, added to existing panels, or installed on its own. It is set to end on 31 March 2027, when the rate returns to 5%.

Installations booked close to the deadline depend on survey dates, equipment supply and grid paperwork. None of those move quickly in the first months of the year.

Your Questions

Common Questions

Is the quote really free?

Yes. There is no charge for the quote and no obligation to go ahead.

Who contacts me, and how many companies?

One. Your details go to our single vetted local installer, who contacts you directly. They are not passed to a list of companies competing for the job. Solar Panels Edinburgh does not carry out installation work.

Can I add a battery to solar panels I already have?

In most cases, yes. If you have a hybrid inverter, the battery connects to it. If not, the inverter is swapped for a hybrid one, or a battery with its own inverter is fitted. Our installer confirms which from your equipment.

Do I need solar panels to have a battery?

No. A battery on its own can charge on cheaper night-rate electricity and run your home through the day. Octopus Flux needs solar panels, so a battery on its own uses a different tariff, such as Economy 7.

How big a battery do I need?

It depends on how much electricity you use in the evening and overnight, not on the size of your roof. Our installer sizes it from your usage. Sigenergy's battery modules stack, so capacity can be added later.

Will a battery keep my power on in a power cut?

It can, with a Sigen Energy Gateway and a system designed for backup. A battery alone does not do it automatically. Say so when you enquire, because it changes the design.

Where does the battery go?

Usually a garage, a utility room or an outside wall. Sigenergy's casing is rated IP66 for outdoor fitting. Our installer checks the options with you.

How quickly will I hear back?

Most enquiries are contacted within one working day.

What happens to my details?

They are passed to our vetted local installer so they can prepare your quote. They are not sold on. ReachAI Ltd is registered with the Information Commissioner's Office under reference ZB828222. Full detail is in the Privacy Policy.
